Fame follows the lives of teen performers from freshman year to graduation at New York City High School for the Performing Arts. I love a good coming-of-age story where people try to “find themselves.” I love the songs, and all the performances and the cast of characters were great. For example, there’s Denise (heart her). Her parents want her to pursue classical music but she discovers that she can’t truly be her best unless she’s singing. And wow, does she have a voice! But Denise is just one of the many kids trying to make it through high school. I just wish the film spent more time getting to know them all. I guess that’s always the problem with an ensemble cast though.
Other great things about the film were the teachers! Why weren’t any of my high school teachers that awesome? A wonderful Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) plays the students’ fav vocal teacher. She takes them out one night for karaoke at Lucky Cheng’s in NYC. Now that’s a field trip!
The film leaves you all warm and fuzzy. You can reach for the stars and make your dreams come true. All that good stuff. In today’s bleak world, who doesn’t want to see a fun movie that helps you to remember that you can “live forever” and “light up the sky like a flame”? I’m definitely in the mood to sing and dance along. This film is def Oh snap!
